I have been practicing counseling for approximately 24 years, starting during the second year of my doctoral studies. I graduated from the University of Florida (Gainesville) in 1999 with a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. While my pre-doctoral training at the University of Florida emphasized cognitive-behavioral approaches to treating psychological disorders, my interests in understanding personality development drew me to develop an interpersonal/relational approach to counseling. Neuropsychological, psychological, and gender assessment has allowed me to integrate and better understand the forces that affect and shape child, adolescent, and adult development.
My career has focused on working with children, adolescents and adults who experience various forms of trauma as well as understanding how neurocognitive issues interfere with learning, forming relationships, and self-development. In addition, I have much clinical experience addressing multiracial, multicultural, sexuality, and gender identity issues through counseling, including working with clients to explore their racial identities, addressing questions related to sexual and gender identities, and coming out and disclosing various identities.
